Annual Resident Picnic Recap
Lindsay Graham
More than 1,000 residents joined Picerne Military Housing to celebrate families, friends and neighbors at Picerne’s sixth annual Resident Picnic held Saturday, May 16th. The forecasted rain held off long enough for residents to enjoy a variety of fun events and activities. Held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.; this event is hosted each year in appreciation for all residents living on post at Fort Meade.
Children enjoyed face painting, a magic show from Bubbles the Clown, moon bounces, a giant slide, an obstacle course, games, climbing aboard the Fort Meade fire truck, hand-spun cotton candy, popcorn and more. Residents of all ages also participated in the very first “Picerne’s All-Star Shootout”, a challenging basketball obstacle course for all skill levels. Four champions from each age group took home a shiny trophy and each participant received a fun prize.
Children and adults also enjoyed competing in the annual pie eating contests to win $25 gift cards and excitedly anticipated the results of the Army Survey Prize giveaway drawing held near the end of the event. Picerne hosted the prize giveaway drawing for all residents that completed and submitted their sealed Department of the Army Privatized Housing Survey. Two of the five winners were present to accept their prizes which included an Apple iTouch, a Sony DigitalCam, a Play Station 3, a Nintendo Wii and a 42” flat-screen television. The other three winners were notified and received their prizes after the event. These prizes were won in addition to an early prize drawing held in each Neighborhood on April 27 for a Garmin GPS. Congratulations to all 10 prize drawing winners!
The Fort Meade Police Department and Picerne Community Outreach: Neighbors Helping Neighbors program also hosted their third annual Bicycle Rodeo. Many children and parents participated in this event designed to help familiarize children and family members with bicycle safety and operation. Children lined up to receive bicycle tune-ups, safety inspections, registered their bicycles and also received a certificate for navigating the obstacle course. Bicycles donated by the USO were raffled off to twelve children during the event.
“This year’s Bicycle Rodeo and Resident Picnic were a great success and we hope that everyone had a great time participating in all of the fun activities!” says Communications Manager, Angela Marcum. “Our team truly enjoys hosting resident events throughout the year. It is one of the small ways that we are able to show our appreciation to our military families for the sacrifices that they make every day.”
Picerne thanks all of the residents who were able to attend and all the residents who filled out their Army Survey to ensure that we are Making the Difference here on Fort Meade.
