Housing Privatization
Housing Privatization is a Department of Defense initiative intended to improve the quality of life for military families through private sector practices and creativity. Under this initiative, the service member’s Basic Allowance for Housing is paid as “rent” to maintain, repair, renovate, manage and construct family housing. As one of four pilot sites selected by the Army, Fort Meade is undergoing an amazing metamorphosis that will conclude in 2012.
In partnership with Fort Meade, Picerne Military Housing is currently implementing a 50-year vision called the Community Development and Management Plan. This plan is for managing, repairing, maintaining and upgrading existing housing until it is replaced. The plan also calls for designing, constructing and subsequently managing and maintaining 2,627 newly constructed and newly renovated homes. In addition, 112 historic homes will be upgraded and renovated. Neighborhood Centers, complete with pool and athletic facilities, jogging trails, tot-lots and inviting green spaces, will reflect the Picerne commitment to Families First™.
